How to Add Captions to Instagram Reels (Free, No Upload)

Updated September 24, 2026 ยท 4 min read

Captions turn a Reel that people scroll past into one they stop and watch. This guide shows how to add clean, animated captions to an Instagram Reel for free, and how to style and position them so they look native on the platform.

Why captions matter on Reels

A large share of people browse Instagram with the sound off: on public transport, at work, or late at night. If your Reel depends on what you say, viewers without sound miss the point in the first two seconds and move on. Captions fix that.

Captions also make your content accessible to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, help viewers whose first language isn't English, and keep attention on screen because the eye follows the words as they appear.

Instagram's own captions vs burned-in captions

Instagram offers automatic captions in some regions and for some accounts, but the styles are limited, the feature isn't available everywhere, and the captions stay inside Instagram. If you cross-post the same video to TikTok or YouTube Shorts, you have to caption it again.

Burned-in captions (also called open captions) are drawn directly onto the video frames. They look exactly the way you designed them on every platform and every device, and they can't be switched off. For short-form content that's usually what you want. Read more in Open vs closed captions.

Step by step: captioning a Reel with CapMagic Studio

  1. Record vertically. Reels are 9:16. Film with your phone held upright, then copy the video to your computer.
  2. Open CapMagic Studio and select your video. MP4, MOV and WebM files up to 250 MB and 10 minutes are supported. The video is processed inside your browser; it isn't uploaded.
  3. Wait for the automatic captions. The app listens to the speech (English) and writes the captions with word-level timing. The first run downloads the speech model once, so it takes a little longer.
  4. Fix any wrong words in the Transcript tab. Names, brand terms and numbers are the most common mistakes. See How to fix auto-generated captions fast.
  5. Pick a style. The Reels Karaoke preset (soft background pill with a glowing highlight) suits most Reels. Adjust colours, font and size in Colors & Style.
  6. Position the captions. In Placement, keep captions clear of the bottom of the frame where Instagram shows your username, caption text and audio name, and away from the buttons on the right. Around 65โ€“75% down the frame usually works well.
  7. Export. Click Export Video. In Chrome and Edge you get an MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio), which Instagram accepts. Then upload it to Instagram as usual.

Tips for Reels captions that get read

  • Show 2โ€“4 words at a time. Use the Display Chunk Size setting. Short chunks are easier to read at scrolling speed than full sentences.
  • Go big and bold. Captions should be readable on a phone held at arm's length. Heavy fonts like Montserrat or Poppins work well.
  • Use the highlight colour sparingly. One accent colour for the spoken word is enough; don't fight your brand colours.
  • Preview on your phone before posting. What looks large on a laptop can look small on a phone.
Tip: Export the SRT file as well (the SRT button). If you ever repurpose the video for YouTube, you can upload the SRT as proper closed captions.

Before you post: a 60-second check

Once your captioned video is exported, do one last pass on the device your audience actually uses: a phone.

  • Watch it muted. Can you follow the whole Reel without sound? If not, a key line may be missing or too short on screen.
  • Check the first three seconds. The opening caption should be on screen immediately, since that's when people decide to keep watching.
  • Check the cover frame. If Instagram picks a frame mid-caption, the text on your grid may look cut off. Choose a clean cover in the Instagram upload screen.
  • Check the edges. Make sure no word is hidden behind Instagram's buttons or your caption text.

If anything needs changing, go back to the editor, adjust, and export again. Your settings stay in place while the tab is open.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. CapMagic Studio is free to use, with no watermark and no sign-up. Captioning and export run in your browser, so there is no server cost per video.

Will Instagram reduce the quality of my video?

Instagram re-compresses every upload, whatever tool you use. Exporting a clean 1080ร—1920 MP4 (H.264/AAC) gives Instagram the best possible starting point.

Can I caption Reels that aren't in English?

Automatic transcription currently supports English speech. For other languages, paste your script or import a subtitle file. See how to add Hindi captions for an example.

Can I use the same video on TikTok and YouTube Shorts?

Yes. That's one of the main advantages of burned-in captions. Just check that your caption position also clears TikTok's on-screen buttons.

Ready to caption your video?

Free, in your browser, and your video never leaves your device.
