How to Add Subtitles to TikTok Videos That People Actually Read

TikTok can generate captions automatically, and viewers can turn them on or off. They're useful, but you can't control the font, colours or animation, and they only exist on TikTok.

Most creators who post the same clip to several platforms burn their subtitles into the video instead. The look is consistent everywhere, and it matches the fast, word-by-word style viewers are used to on TikTok.

The TikTok look: word-by-word captions

The popular TikTok style shows only a few words at a time, often in capital letters, with the word being spoken highlighted in a bright colour. It feels energetic and keeps the eye moving.

In CapMagic Studio the TikTok Viral preset gives you this look: a bold condensed font, uppercase text, a thick black outline for contrast and a yellow highlight with a quick pop animation. Set Display Chunk Size to 1–3 words for the classic punchy effect.

Keep subtitles out of the danger zones

TikTok draws its own interface on top of your video. Subtitles placed underneath it get covered:

• Right side: the like, comment, share and profile buttons.
• Bottom: your username, video description and sound name.
• Top: the Following / For You tabs and search.

A safe choice is roughly the middle of the frame, or slightly below it (about 55–70% down), centred horizontally. Use the Vertical Offset slider in the Placement tab, and check your final video in the TikTok app before posting. TikTok occasionally changes its layout.

Step by step

1. Open CapMagic Studio and select your vertical (9:16) video. It stays on your device.
2. Let the automatic captions finish, then correct any words in the Transcript tab.
3. Choose TikTok Viral, then fine-tune font size, colours and animation.
4. Move the captions into the safe zone with Placement.

Common mistakes

• Too many words on screen. Full sentences are hard to read in a fast edit.
• Low contrast. White text without an outline disappears over bright backgrounds. Add a stroke or a background pill.
• Captions out of sync. If you cut the video after captioning, captions shift. Caption the final edit.
• Unchecked spelling. Automatic captions are good but not perfect. A wrong word on screen is very visible.

Timing: keep subtitles in step with speech

On TikTok, even a small delay between the voice and the words on screen feels wrong. A few habits keep everything in sync:

• Caption the final edit. Trim, reorder and add b-roll first. If you cut the video after captioning, every caption after the cut shifts.
• Use word-level timing. Automatic captions in CapMagic Studio are timed word by word, so the highlight follows your voice. Check fast sections and correct any line that starts late.
• Leave captions on screen long enough. A one-word caption that flashes for a tenth of a second can't be read. If a phrase is very fast, combine it with the next one.
• Watch the export once before posting, at normal speed, with sound on and then muted.
